After a great start of five wins and one loss, the Arizona State University Sun Devils went on a four game losing streak. A streak that ended Saturday night when they pulled off a remarkable National playoff spoiler upset of the Oregon Ducks. The 9-1 Ducks come into Tempe with aspirations to get into the NCAA National Championship Playoffs, and the Vegas line had them a 16.5 favorite.
Usually getting off to a slow start and finding themselves with quick deficits, the Devils defense was game against the Heisman candidate Justin Herbert and had him rattled early and often. Herbert missed high with the ball and threw 2 interceptions right in the hands of the Sun Devils.
The Sun Devils Came in with a sense of focus that they hadn’t had since the first six weeks of the season and a confidence that echoed their coach “we were tired of losing” Said Herm after the game.
This game demonstrated Arizona State University’s true talent. Brandon Aiyuk for the Sun Devils caught seven passes for 161 yards which will put him at more than 1,100 receiving yards.
Jayden Daniels may have earned Pac-12 Player of the week with his performance of throwing 408 yards against the number two defense in the Pac-12 and the number one defense in takeaways.
Frank Darby has been on the verge of breaking out for multiple weeks and this week he succeeded with four catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Eno Benjamin had 31 rushes for 114 rushing yards. This is the true potential that Arizona State University fans have been waiting for all season.
During the first three quarters of the game, Arizona State University appeared to be back on track defensively. In a timely fashion, Justin Herbert began anticipating the ASU defense. As a result, Oregon Ducks made a comeback by scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and then ran out of time to successfully win the game.
Late in the third quarter after the second interception of Hebert, the devils played a little conservative offense which was the spark that allowed the Ducks back in the game late. Coach Edwards said in the presser “we liked what our defense was doing the hole game” but that almost back fired as time expired as Eno Benjamin picked up the game winning first down.
So much for the Pac 12 getting its shot at the Playoff birth this year, as the Sun Devils played spoiler and get the 31-28 victory improving them to 6-5 and also making them Bowl eligible.
Next week is rivalry week for college football! Arizona State University opposes University of Arizona in Tempe. Statistically, University of Arizona is not an impressive team in comparison to Arizona State University; however, fans know anything is possible during rivalry week.
